For the renowned Newcomb Art Gallery at Tulane
University, New Orleans, LA, we are seeking a dynamic and
experienced Director. Founded in 1834, Tulane is one of the
nation’s most highly regarded and selective independent
research universities, offering degrees in the liberal arts,
science and engineering, architecture, business, law, social
work, medicine, and public health and tropical medicine. Gifts
to the University from Josephine Louise Newcomb in 1886 established
Newcomb College in memory of her daughter, Harriott Sophie
Newcomb. The college became the first degree-granting college
for women to be founded within a university in the United
States. Today Newcomb-Tulane College enrolls all undergraduates
at the university, while the H. Sophie Newcomb Memorial College
Institute enhances women’s education at Tulane University.

Museum Director
The Mulvane Art Museum at Washburn University
The Mulvane Art Museum, an AAM accredited
museum, is searching for a full-time Museum Director. The
museum, founded in 1922, is located on the Washburn University
campus, and has a collection of approximately 3000 objects
from around the world, with a concentration in American art
of the 20th century and the state of Kansas. The Mulvane draws
its funding from federal, state and local grants and contracts,
from the university budget, from the Friends of Mulvane Art
Museum, and from private gifts and corporate contributions.

The Sheldon Memorial Art Gallery and Sculpture Garden
The Sheldon Memorial Art Gallery and Sculpture
Garden, one of the nation’s premier university art museums,
is also a leading cultural institution in the state of Nebraska
and located at the University of Nebraska - Lincoln. Completed
in 1963, the Gallery is the work of distinguished architect
Philip Johnson. Sheldon houses both the Nebraska Art Association
(NAA) collection, founded in 1888, and the University of Nebraska
collection, initiated in 1929. These integrated collections
comprise more than 12,000 works of art in all media and document
the development of art in the United States through the American
experience. This comprehensive collection of American art
includes prominent holdings of 19th-century landscape and
still life, American Impressionism, early Modernism, geometric
abstraction, Regionalism, Abstract Expressionism, pop, minimalism
and contemporary art. The Sculpture Garden, which was created
in the 1970s, has been expanded across the university campus
and today more than 30 monumental sculptures are exhibited
year-round. The collection holds more than 2,000 photographs.
Sheldon has entered into a strategic planning
process, identifying several goals for accomplishment over
the next seven years. The University is exploring options
for enlarging the Museum on campus or opening an off campus
multipurpose arts and humanities center in nearby downtown
Lincoln.
The Museum is governed by UNL, and the Director
position reports directly to the Chancellor through the Associate
to the Chancellor. In addition, the Director works closely
with the NAA. The Director oversees 19 staff and a $1.7 million
operating budget. Sheldon Memorial Art Gallery houses 11 galleries
in 10,000 square feet plus the 3,375 square foot Great Hall;
administrative offices; storage space for some of the collections;
a museum store and a 299-seat theater.
The Director has responsibility for the artistic
and administrative leadership of the Museum, including development
of a clear vision and strategic planning, care of the collections
and acquisitions and exhibitions. The Director also has responsibility
for the overall management of Sheldon’s physical, human
and financial resources, its programs and future direction
and growth. S/He will serve as chief spokesperson and have
ongoing communication with the Deans and Directors of various
Colleges, Centers and Divisions to explore opportunities for
collaborative programs. The Director will engage in all fundraising
plans and activities including cultivating and soliciting
new funding sources while maintaining productive relationships
with existing donors.. more
